Fluency Practice
Fluency is important!
Fluency is ability to read with speed, accuracy, and proper expression. In order to understand what they read, children must be able to read fluently whether they are reading aloud or silently. When reading aloud, fluent readers read in phrases and add highs and lows in their voice where needed. Their reading is smooth and has expression.
You can help your child become a fluent reader by:
- Read a passage to them using your best reader voice, then have them read back to you mocking your voice. - - Read your favorite books, poems, phrases, or word list over and over again. Practice getting smoother and reading with expression.
- Support and encourage your child. Realize that he or she is likely frustrated by reading.
- Use books on tapes; have the child follow along in the print copy.
- Have the student practice reading a passage with a certain emotion, such as sadness or excitement, to emphasize expression and intonation.
- Time your child reading a passage. Have them track their time. How many words can they read in a minute?
